This research aims at studying the attitudes of Persian speakers of Karaj to non - standard varieties of Persian by measuring both their success in identifying five regional varieties of Persian including Abadani, Afghani, Shirazi, Kermani and Yazdi and analyzing their positive or negative attitudes towards them. Learning about the attitudes of members of a language community towards linguistic diversity is a key factor in the success of language planning. The independent variables are age, sex and bilinguality. The research tool is a researcher-made questionnaire which comprises personal information, accent identification and language attitudes. The informants are 218 students in the age- rang of 18 to 50 whose main language of communication was Persian. In the selection of universities, the convenience sampling and in the selection of the informants random sampling has been used. The results showed that the informants were more successful in identifying Yazdi variety. The informants used positive and negative traits to describe the varieties and the percentage of negative traits was higher for Afghani variety. The lowest percentage of attitude components is related to Afghani and Kermani varieties. Age and sex variables had a significant effect on Persian speakers’ attitude towards the varieties under study.

Speakers’ linguistic behavior regarding the usage of lectal variations (regional, Shirazi and Standard varieties), creates mixed responses which are influenced by social variables, the age, gender, education and place of residence. The favorable and unfavorable reactions toward the regional lectals have led to the formation of social categorizations from a cognitive point of view. This field study describes the correlation between social layers and linguistic forms in Fars Province. Data collection was carried out through a survey method by 490 speakers from Shiraz, Marvdasht, Kazeroun, Fasa, Jahrom and several cities around Shiraz. The founding indicates that, the age group of 15 to 30 year-old more than the other age group, women more than men and, speakers with higher education, prefer to use the Standard Variety rather than their local varieties in social domains (family, education, work, street, media, and in elites’ discourse). Although the Standard Variety is dominant everywhere, local varieties are used by the native speakers to express their identity in informal social settings and live with these varieties alongside their family and acquaintances.

Speakers of non-standard varieties have been driven toward the standard ones due to the positive and negative judgments about these varieties. This study is to investigate the social status of varieties of Farsi. The main question is what the impacts of socio-cognitive factors are on speakers’ attitude and on the usage of different varieties of Farsi (Regional, Shirazi and Standard). To collect data, a total of 490 participants from Shiraz, Marvdasht ,Kazeroon, Fasa, Jahrom and several smaller cities contributed in survey method, 223 of whom participated in MGT and 126 were interviewed as well. In this regard, attitude is studied in the form of components such as solidarity and social status. The findings indicate that participants express loyalty toward their city and regional varieties, since these varieties are attributed to their speakers' identity. Regional varieties are dominant in the family domain to highlight solidarity in the circle of family and friends, while in other domains (education, workplace, streets, media and elite’s speech) the standard variety dominates. Both solidarity and social status are attributed to the usage of standard variety. But what has still kept the regional varieties dynamic is the feeling of intimacy and sense of belonging.
